Bladder Cancer

Bladder Cancer is the sixth most-common type of cancer in the US, with 65,000 people diagnosed each year, leading to as many as 14,000 deaths per year. Although the exact cause of bladder cancer is not known, some contributing factors have been identified. Smoking has been linked to a five-fold increased risk of bladder cancer and possibly associated with half of male cases and a third of female cases.

AUCNY doctors can help diagnose and treat bladder cancer, but it starts with recognizing the symptoms and getting an appointment to be tested. Some of the symptoms of bladder cancer are commonly found in other non-cancerous medical conditions, so an AUCNY urologist’s diagnostic workup is important for a correct and timely diagnosis.

When diagnosed at an early stage, the tumor is well-localized to the inner lining of the bladder. As it progresses over time, it can enter the muscular bladder wall, progress to the local lymph nodes, and then spread to distant sites throughout the body affecting the bones, liver, and lungs.

Bladder cancer symptoms may include:

  • Blood in the urine
  • Pain on urination
  • Increased frequency or urgency

Diagnostic testing which your AUCNY doctor may order:

  • Detailed history and physical examination – your doctor will ask you about your symptoms, personal and family medical history, social history including smoking habits, physical examination with special emphasis on the bladder area including rectal/pelvic exam with blood and urine testing
  • Intravenous pyelogram (IVP) – a type of x-ray imaging where an intravenous contrast dye followed by an x-ray permits visualization of the kidney, ureter, and bladder
  • CT, MRI, PET scan – imaging procedures to detect the presence and possible spread to surrounding tissue, size, and location of tumors
  • Biopsy – taking a piece of tissue for us to determine the presence and degree of abnormal cells
  • Cystoscopy – a procedure in which a thin “camera” tube is inserted into the urethra for visualization

Treatment Options

AUCNY doctors can help diagnose and treat bladder cancer. If you have been diagnosed with bladder cancer, your doctor will discuss the most appropriate treatment options for you.

Treatment options include:

  • Surgery – removal of the tumor or a larger portion of the bladder or entire bladder removal
  • Local or systemic chemotherapeutic medications – may be used before surgery to shrink the tumor and/or after surgery to help treat and reduce chance of recurrence
  • Immunotherapy – a newer method of treatment to assist one’s own immune system in fighting tumor growth
  • Radiation – our colleagues at Advanced Radiation Centers of New York (ARC) team with our AUCNY doctors to provide state-of-the-art treatment options to fight bladder cancer. To learn more about radiation treatments from our trusted partners, visit https://www.advancedradiationcenters.com/ .
